Large Scale Central

KOPS Part 2

I’ve been persuaded to hold another Ops session this summer. Usually I head to Canada in July but with the border closed, July 10-11 seems like a good time. So mark your calendars for part 2.

Marked. Reservations made (must be something going on in the area, had to choose a different hotel this time)

We’d love to come back, but have already booked a trip to Denver including that weekend. Have fun!

Would love to make it, however our next trip is up to Mass, Late July/early August…

I need my seafood fix… missed it last year…

Guys;

Just a bit of irony on my part. I served as a car host for 611 and 1218 excursions during the first series of excursions in the 1980s/90s. I served again after 2015 on at least one 611 excursion. I am happy to see the J running, BUT 611 running on the Strasburg RR is like using a moon rocket to go from Roanoke to Lynchburg!

I went to Millersville State College (that’s what it was called in the latter 1960s), so I would frequently ride the bus to Strasburg RR on a Saturday for pleasant railfanning. Heck, the Wanamaker, Kempton, & Southern RR, where I ran H. K. Porter saddletank steamers, was only a bit shorter than the Strasburg RR.

Again, ironic, but glad the J gets to “stretch her legs.”

Regards, David Meashey

(Edited to correct spelling of rocket.)

Me and Ralph Berg caught it when it ran from Manassas to Front Royal in Va. Even driving the Interstate we had a hard time catching up with it.

We did manage to catch it before it departed.

I agree Dave, but the Class 1’s in the East are no longer friendly to steam excursions. Not sure why that is, PTC requirements perhaps?

Hey, cool. We could have potentially crossed paths, from 1982 to 1986 (when we moved to Missouri a couple days before the Dismal Swamp thing. Recall that Ramona’s diner was one of the derailed cars) I was in Tidewater NRHS there in Portsmouth and did the car host thing.

Yeah, 611 would happily run like the wind as long as someone kept feeding her fuel and water.

Them little 69 inch drivers had somewhat more git up and go than their size might initially suggest!

Hmm …

Rocket” …

Ya know, if I had the power to tinker with history I’d have there be some wheezy old timer 4-4-0 and train of open vestibule cars named the “Roanoke Rocket”.

Marked on the calendar and we’ll see if we can make it work. Should be at the Finger Lakes Live Steamers around then. The 611 being at Strasburg for the Summer would be worth a look see?

Ric, I’m hoping by then the novelty has worn off a little and finding a place to park won’t be an issue.

I tried to catch it last summer and finding a parking spot along the route was a problem.

Sounds like a normal Summer Forecast in that part of the USA. Actually, a little cooler than it could be. There are rumblings that Jim and Sue might come down. Equipment is packed and fun is forecasted.

One thing you can count on: It will NOT be as predicted.

Looking forward to our visit. Thanks for doing this, Ken.

Thanks, Bruce.

I’m looking forward to it, too.
