This was one of my many unfinished projects I had started long ago. It’s one of my most requested designs as there is nothing in 1:29.

I designed this using a few pictures of a specific prototype and it seems I have made a mistake. I had thought the tank was more of rounded Octagonal shape. This didn’t become apparent until I began looking at images for the decals. I’ll modify for a version that will use a length of pipe and make an appointment to get my eyes checked! Don’t know that I’d be quick to do away with that tank. Though not really any Octagonal tanks found you can see a fair number do have a flat face which gives the impression of an octagon structure

Thanks David. I’ve come to realize the flattened surfaces are probably due to the fact that these are jacketed tanks. The inside tank is a cylinder but after applying the insulation layer it probably sticks out a bit too far on the sides so they compress it a bit.

Dan how would I go about getting this printed? do I download the files then go to somewhere like Shapeways or are there places to take this to get them printed?

Pete, You could download and send them to Shapeways. Also, there are other services like https://www.treatstock.com/ and https://printathing.com/order/ or you could find a local library or makerspace that will educate and let you use a printer. Thanks Dan, looked at Shapeways site and was wondering what type of filament would you recommend, they have everything from soft plastic to steel and gold. I had seen someone mention ABS but didn’t find that in the list of the 50 materials available. I really have no clue on this but would love to have several of these.

Gold? Yes Gold would be nice! And like the Outhouse, It could be a travelling award! I used PETg as it’s very durable yet easily sanded. You may want to hold off until I finish v2 which will use a length of pipe as printing the tank will be quite costly. I quickly checked a couple of services and they want about $30 just for the tank part! Just to give a idea, I pay about $25 kilo for PETg so it costs $8.10 to print the entire thing.

I do like the idea of the octagon one and a round one since I will need 2 and 3" pipe I have so that part will be easy. looking forward to building them. Looked at buildathing and they only offer PLA and ABS, price was pretty close to the same , but wow like you said the tank is very spendy!, $54.54. I have not decided which way to go but will definitely build one.

I’ve added the tank ends for use with 3" (3.5"OD) Pipe or Conduit. Cut to 198mm.

Dan when searching on the buildathing they do not offer PETg as a choice, either PLA or ABS. Should I look elsewhere to find the PETg or will one of those products give good results, I noticed they offer both in several colors so getting them already in the color you want seems like a good idea, then just have to spray them with a UV inhibitor

Pete,

ABS is actually a better choice than PETg but its tricky to print. Most folks like to smooth the layer lines with filler and sanding (ABS can be chemically smoothed with acetone) but you could forgo the smoothing - get the parts printed ion the final color and do a UV clearcoat. Would still look good from a few feet away.

Digging this thread back up. The walkways on this make nice catwalks in 1:20.3 scale.
