      Dan,

Thanks again for stepping us through this build.  Based upon what you did here, if you start printing now, you'll have your RR by Mik 2021!

      Eric

      Hey Dan,

Be the first guy to have a completely 3D printed garden RR. Good thinking Eric.

boy Dan, you know a divorce lawyer for us all with the new RR Mik build? Would love to get this one somewhere near completed before trying another one.

No divorces, Pete, just cuts down on the competition since there are very few on here without  a layout.  Now if Devon and Eric have their way, it won't matter cause I'll never get finished printing

Well as expected, I did not finish the challenge build.  Still need to add roofing, jib crane, more painting and weathering, steps, details ..... on and on and on ......  But here it is anyway....

It's looking real good. It was an ambitious project. Can't wait for you to finish it.

A few final statistics on this build:

Total Print time = 297 hours

Total individual print jobs = 109

Total individual pieces printed = 205

Total length of filament used = 5,346 feet (just over a mile)

Total Cost of filament = $96.23 (all in possession before Jan 1, 2020, so it doesn't count toward $30 limit) But still ridiculous.  I could have built the entire project out of wood for free

I've hinted all along that I didn't think this was an efficient nor productive way to model a project of this size and the above statistics prove that without a doubt.  Is 3D printing a valuable tool for modeling, absolutely.  But it has its limitations with the current printing technologies.  Details, one off parts, tools, small, complicated models and such are ideal for printing but not large scale structures.  I print all sorts of tools for many jobs I do around the house including modeling.  For example, when building the deck for this project I found I needed some more small squares of a specific size.  Took about 2 minutes to create the model and in about an hour I had 8, specifically designed squares ready to use for literally a few pennies.

Many thanks for following along on this project and a special thanks to all those who provided comments and suggestions.

Wow. Your RR is going to cost a fortune. It is an interesting lesson though between its ability and its viability.

An Old Wise Mentor once stressed to me.....   " Just because you can,  Doesn't mean that you should "

In this case... Dans extreme build, worked well, and as he says,  just not the best way in the end...

But if he was to use the prints, to make molds for a production run of many more models, then it would be time and effort well spent.

      Dave

Dan, you are defiantly the master at 3D printing, great looking building I am boggled at the amount of print time it took, thanks for the share, Bill

Wow Dan, I have been so busy with my build I have neglected to follow all the others, now playing catchup. Your 3D printed master piece, Wow, I see I am not alone in the 3D printable RR world

Wow you bit off one big project. I also noticed in the background at least one Mec Reloader. Are you a shotgun shooter?  I have a hydraulic spolar, I used to have all 4 gauges of Mec's in hydraulic.

What printer are you using? Your structure is a real design challenge. You are quite the master at 3D drawing, that is my favorite part of 3D printing.

That will be really cool when finished, thanks for sharing

      Dennis

Thanks, Dennis. I have a Prusa MK2.5s that's been upgraded to an extruded aluminum frame for better rigidity.  The 3D modeling is also my favorite part of the printing process.  Not only is the modeling a fun challenge, but figuring out how to design it so you can actually print it is another challenge.  I have several (16, 20, 28) MEC reloaders, all manual though.  The 16 and 28 are single stage SizeMasters, the one you see in the photo is the 20 and its a 8567N Grabber progressive loader.  My son and I do a lot of shooting (we live in Alabama, go figure ).  I'm not sure if we're saving any money, I reload so I can get the loads I want and that pattern well in the various shotguns we have.  I also reload rifle and handgun cartridges.  You can probably pick out the Forster CoAx single stage metallic press in some of the photos and I also have a RCBS Rock Chucker single stage and a Lyman 8 stage turret press.
