      My current indoor layout

Got some pictures taken today of my indoor layout that been built to its current state for a few years now. You can tell by looking at the pictures that the layout has been idle and ended up being a catch all for things like my antique auto association and Garden Railways magazines. Please bear with me as I re-learn the proper lingo for things. If I’ve misstated a term, please, I encourage you to correct me as it will help me learn it faster plus make my posts more easily understood. I have thick skin and don’t take offense to being corrected so don’t let that hinder your comments. If I screw up and it’s funny, enjoy the laugh at my expense and I’ll laugh with you.

The buildings you see are just set in place and will be used on the outside layout in the future. I purchased some that had been very well made and some I’ve built from Garden Texture plans. My turn table was built from GR plans if I remember right and I made up my own electric rotating mechanism from a geared motor and some gears from a paper tape machine. It needs a slightly slower motor and I’ve designed a way on paper to stop it at each spur and transfer power to the spurs but I haven’t put the design into the TT mechanism yet. The bridge and two tracks seen to the left are what lead to the back wall of the house and will take the trains out to and back from the outside layout.

There are currently three lines in the yard, shown with trains on them that will feed the outside loop when the layout runs automatically. These three tracks are already wired through the LGB auxiliary switch motor contacts using reed switches fired by loco magnets for the automatic operatio. There are also toggle switches on each line which to bypass the auxiliary contacts and allow the tracks to be fed power regardless of the points position. In the pictures you will notice that I had a ceiling mounted line at one time that will most likely be goi back up now that I have a to of brass track that I won’t be using outside. My two Stainz Locomotives will be used on this track.

I have four LGB Moguls, three with sound, one updated Bachmann shay, a old Bachmann climax that I’m in the process of repairing the trucks, two lgb Stainz locos, one with sound, one without, and a new climax I just had to buy for $199 from train world. The rolling stock in the pictures is pretty much the extent I have other than a full lgb circus set with extra cars. The shay pulls some log cars and caboose scratch built by me using GRs plans. On one of the tracks coming Back from the future outside layout is a consist of weathered and chalked cars that will probably run back and forth with the climax to the mill or mine on a separate loop. You can also see my Ruby live steam that was assembled from a kit and will be getting a nice level layout of its own somewhere else in my yard.

I like your attitude. I believe if we can't laugh at ourselves then what right do we have to laugh at anyone else. . .and I am an ass and laugh at everyone.

The “L” is 12’x12’ with each leg being 6’ wide. All curves and switches are the tightes, R1’s I believe. My goal was again, to fit as much as I could in my area knowing that this inside was really a staging area for the outside layout. The deck is 1/2” ply on a 2x4 framework so the deck can withstand my 230lbs on it. When I have an issue close to the wall I currently climb up and step on the deck to get to the problem area.

I think all of us must have a little “ass hat” in us to be dedicated to any hobby. While our hobbies are for our enjoyment, when we seriously look at the money we spend, there’s some AH in that, but it’s a good type of AH. I’ve been a big hobby enthusiast all my life as I started working very young in a family business which offered very little free time. In HS, while playing football and only attending until 11:40am each day because my grades and credits were high, I worked over 50 hours a week. When I graduated HS and went to work full time, my time card hours averaged 88hrs. It was 7 days a week so any spare time I had was constructive playtime. Going to the beach, hanging out drinking, sleeping, etc., was just a waste of time to me. My hobbies starting from youth till now, included building/flying RC planes, building furniture, hunting, restoring a 23’ Ford T for my dad, snowmobiles, archery hunting, cow horses (learned to ride, train, and rope, later competing in rodeos all over US, mostly east of the Mississippi), dirt bike mechanic (son was a high ranked amateur motorcross competitor), car restorer, antique car restorer and show Presenter, and now finally onto my G scale! While I don’t still do all those hobbies, I still do most with the horses, snowmobiles, and dirt biking gone. So if I wasn’t an AH, I’d probably be filthy wealthy by now! What I do see, but only occasionally, are the real AHs, and they’re in every hobby unfortunately. Have to say the horses were the worst with the car showing group running a little distant second. While I’m thick skinned, I don’t bother or waste my time with a real AH and while I’m very constrained, my older age has kicked in a time or two where my patience gets over ridden, and I tell that AH that he/she (yes, I’ve encountered she AH, especially in the horse world), where they can go.

So now everyone pretty knows about me, I like to have fun, spend my money, laugh at myself, try and learn from my mistake, and don’t get offended by much. Oh, and that I will tell the bad type AH’s where to go if I’ve had enough.

I hear ya ... some times the horses can be an AH as well (mine can be) ... I'm tired just reading this ...

This year is going to be hard to get much free time. My Oldsmobile has me going to four shows this year. One in WV to try for its 1st Senior award, next one is in july in Lansing MI, July in Allentown PA, and Hershey in October. I have two vehicles I’m restoring over this summer along with my regular job responsibilities so it’s probably going to be hard but I will see if I can make a local one. Are the evnts and dates posted?

Though intended as a staging area, it does look like the indoor layout has room to grow if needed.

The show in MA is located in Springfield, MA at the 'BIG E'.  4 buildings of trains.  I will be there as will many others.   http://railroadhobbyshow.com/

There are at least 2 G layouts running, and dealers have G scale new and used every where and some are great buys.  Never kknow what youu will find from empty LGB boxes to some super deals.
