any body using this instead of Welsh coal ?

I’m certainly not. But then I don’t need to buy any kind of a substitute, seeing as how we buy the real thing half a ton at a time.

Only half a ton? Not very cold there, then… (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-innocent.gif)

Hi Manfred, I was waiting for those with much more experience than me to chime in, but I don’t want things to get stale.

I would think that might work. Things to consider would be one, I doubt it would burn as hot as coal since it’s only charcoal. This may not be horrible since a lot of the coal fired steam I see seems to constantly have the safeties blowing off. Second I would imagine it might also burn up a bit faster requiring more frequent stoking. Just my two cents…

The half ton we buy is for our 7.25" gauge live steamers…those of us over here who use solid fuel in our hutches rely on wood, garnered from the fields around us, being way too poor to be able to afford coal. Wood has served us well for the last 12,000 years since the ice went way, and will no doubt be used until it eventually comes back.
