weathering an AML CSX grain hopper

Gave some rust streaks a shot last night. It’s still a work in progress, but I kinda like it. Needs a few more colors added to it, but I had a fortune in time wrapped up in what is on it, and was tired. So, I’ll work on it some more another day. I wanted it to be a rust bucket. I just don’t like how the trucks look. Also, I still need to add some graffiti to it. I may work on those some more too. Anyway, a couple pics:

Looks good cousin Matt

Looks good, Matt.

Try rubbing some dark grey or black on the trucks. I don’t think they would normally look so rusty. They should pick up dirt and grime from the ground they run over. Keep up the good work. Weathering in real life and modeling is a time consuming process.

Matt, nice job… However, a run thru a wash rack might help clean it up some… (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-sealed.gif)

Matt

Take a look @ Krylon ultra flat camo paint…

Some have used Rustoleum auto primer on there trucks

Also do not go here : http://theweatheringshop.com/home.html

I warned you…

I did some trucks : http://tws-rustbucket.com/thread/4727/scale-trucks

Matt register to this site…you will be amazed!

Thanks cuz David!

Lou, your right. I just don’t like how those trucks look.

Andy, I’m afraid it’s too far gone for just a washrack. Next stop should be the scrap yard. lol.

Sean, Thanks! I grabbed some paint. They didn’t have krylon, it was another brand. I sprayed the trucks late tonight. I’ll post a pic tomorrow sometime. Oh, and I registered on the site. THANKS!

Did a little more work to the grain car. I see the original pictures are gone though…hmmmm. Anyway, I used the camo paint on the trucks, which don’t show up in the pictures. I’m going to give up on the cell phone and actually start using a digital camera. lol. Anyway, here’s the updated pics.

I still need to lighten up the streaks beneath the rust spots. But I like this for an old rusty car. I wanted a rusted out grain car and I think it’s coming along ok. I’m going to let my daughter do the graffiti on this one too. Yep, this car will be tagged. She’s an outstanding artist and I think that would be cool. I’ll have some prototype pictures for her handy so that she has an idea. She’s not into trains, but does like them.

Can I send some cars your way? (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)

Matt, nice work…

Yanno, a little paint and some decals, and that car can look like new again… hehehe (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Lookin’ good, Matt.

Just my opinion, but I don’t spray small parts. If you have sprayed the trucks grey or black already, then I would something like a red rustyish primer. and if it is spray, spray it on an index card (or suitably disposable surface) and dab a Q-tip (registered trademark) onto the rusty color, and dab it in the areas that you don’t think dirt or oil can reach, or areas exposed to washing by rain. (All English Majors can have a ball with that last sentence) Put a little on, let dry, repeat. Doing it this way, it will dry quickly, so you can probably redab in five minutes.

Keep up the good work.

I think the car looks good the way it is. Don’t get too anal with the weathering. I would, however, go with the graffiti. Most aged cars have been set out long enough to be noticed by the local taggers, and have been liberally sprayed with “art”.

Here’s a picture of the real CSXT 259645 .Covered Hopper

So if he wanted to capture that look ,I think some washes of white to lighten his weathering a bit would work ?

The wheels look spot on though !

Steve, if you send them my way do I get to keep them. lol.

lol @ Andy.

Thanks, Lou and Andrew. I’m trying to not to get to picky, since it will be run outside anyway.

lol @ rooster. I may have to tag one of them with that on there.

Mike, how did you find that pic? I just googled a few cars and had been doing some railfanning here locally to get an idea of a rusty one.

Sean, I’m actually doing the white streaks on the conrail hopper I have. I did one panel and it looks pretty good on that red car.

Matt , I like to go to this site for pictures . Here’s the link. http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/rsTypeList.aspx
