PREEN anti-weed work?

Have any of you found the Preen brand anti-weed germination product effective? I have seen it at Cosco in large containers – well worth asking for effectiveness before purchase. Since it is not a liquid, what has been effective as to application?

Thanks,

Wendell

My wife swears by the stuff. And from what I can see, it works pretty good. We put it on every year before we mulch the flower beds.

She applies it by just spreading it by hand, ie; fills a smaller container and just shakes it out on the ground.

It’s supposed to be used a couple times a year, but once a year seems to work fine here.

My GRR is on a slope.

The Preen hasn’t worked too well for me this year.

I have a small, relatively level area where it seems to be working.

Everywhere else, not so much.

I think it’s probably washing down hill in the rain.

We eat our weeds out here. They tast great in a salad.

FYI, Roscoe is their dog.

Jane also uses Preen… She puts it out a couple of times a year…

I’ve found it to be effective.

My wife uses it in all her flower beds and on the layout. The trick is you have to rake it into the ground for it to work the best. That way it doesn’t wash or blow away.

YES - works on sloped and flat terrain in our yard. We apply twice a year in the vegetable garden and flower beds.

My process for the garden in the spring, is to apply recommended amount on top of the ground and then rototill into the soil. Midway into the growing season, I use a bow rake and loosen the soil between the rows and apply Preen again.

Sure beats the ‘cowboy’ way of controlling weeds - pull them by hand!

I have tried it a few times with little success, either my weeds are extra hearty or I’m drinking the wrong brand of beer !

These products work by inhibiting root growth in newly sprouted seeds. So if your weeds are already growing, its too late. If it gets washed away and new seeds sprout, you’re too early. That’s why multiple applications work best especially if you are getting lots of rain.

Yep, its worked on my rr as well. What Brian said about the weeds already growing, you have to pull them.

I wish I could use a product like that…I get to nervous that it will wash into my fish pond.

I would rather do a little extra weeding to be safe.

Should be starting my new build in a few weeks, so will certainly be open and looking for new things to try to cut back on weeds!

Im not a fan of using chemicals in my yard. Especially with the kids playing in the yard all the time (Im guessing Preen is a chemical)? Weeds add character to the laawn lol

Me too. Beside some “weeds” can make for some interesting ground cover while the RR is being built and I am saving up for more Dwarf Alberta Spruce and miniature boxwood.

Jan, I am told that Preen is just corn gluten. I think that your fish will love it, unless they are one a gluten free diet.

Thanks for the information, Steve. I also, put preen on our brick sidewalk and on the track.
