Vise for drill press

Howdy folks
I want to get a vise for my 8" drill press. Ive looked at a bunch of them online, and was hoping people out there had opinions. I’m leaning toward one with angle adjustment as well as X/Y?

So far, I’ve had good luck with two wood hand clamps

Hi Bob,

That’s the way to go if you do a lot of the same pieces and want an accurate way to repeat the set-up. Within strict limitations you can even use the X/Y table for very light milling on a drill press.

Bob:

Be sure the one you get not only allows you to bolt it to the table, but has places you can clamp when the holes don’t line up on the those jobs that are “weird” setups. First one I had the places where the bolts went through just weren’t large enough for a clamp to hold. Next one I spent a bit more for a little bit bigger one that had places for clamping to the table. also, no matter who you buy it from, be sure the slides work smoothly and don’t have any slop - unless they have a way to correct for that.

I have had several different drill press vises over the years. I have never needed a vise which I could clamp to the table, but I have a mill for those operations.

The vise I use most is 2" wide and opens to 2 1/2", very precision…bought from Micro Mart.

May I recommend something called a “Angled drill press vice” have used one for years to hold object safely for drilling.

Here is one to show what they are like.

Get a good quality one and leave the cheap ones alone.

Right now I have an XY vice installed to do some accurate repeatable work but way to large for an 8" drill press.

These are the ones I reach for most often. Neither was expensive. The smaller one is especially useful for delicate modeling tasks:

Angle and XY vises have their uses, to be sure, but 90% of my drilling tasks are more conveniently handled with simple vises. You may want to think about vertical clearance (drill bit point to table) before you buy a tall vise. Just my opinion, of course. Cheers, Steve

I have used one like Steve’s for years. I bought it at Lee Valley, but they no longer sell them.

I like it beacuse it doesn’t take up a lot of room, but is heavy enough to stay put. Is is my third hand when soldering components to circuit boards because you can also use it on either side or standing on its nose. Micro-Mark has them for $30 under stock number 60282.

Also Micro Mark has this one

This is like the one I have been useing for years!
Not a bad looking for the price…

Not sure if you found a vice yet. I have a 4" vice with a x/y table on it. I bought it for my 8" drill press before I bought my mill. I am in NJ. It shoudl fit into a USPS flat rate box the large one. Or I can ship UPS through a business account for pretty cheap. I bought it for about 80.00 I think. Ill take 40.00 for it. Just taking up space now that I have a mill.

OOh, tempting. Are you going to York?

Yes I will be at York on Sat. email me if you need kovacjason at gmail.com

Great, I’ll take it. Bring it to York. Ask for me in the Alcove, where all us miscreants hang out. They’ll know how to find me.

Ok Bob, Please email me so I can get you my cell number.

“Miscreants” ??

Really?

Oh, looked up the definition.

Yeah, that works.

Hey Bob, Looked for you. Noone seemed to know where or who you are. Tried most of the tracks but you never emailed me your phone number to meeet up for the vise. Back on the shelf it goes.

Huh? Jason, did we see you at York? Did you find your way to “the Alcove”?

Next year I think we need to post a map of the layout room and another for the location of the Drag-N-Brag. If I wasn't determined to find the party room I never would have. Following the signage the hotel led to two locked doors with party sounds on the other side, but no-one hearing the knock.

The door was probably locked to keep the “miscreants” from escaping into the general population.

Miscreants ?
I don’t think your EVIL.
