Refresher Coarse on "Dull Coat"

I’ve got a need to soften the gloss on a model.

Can someone list the pros and cons on

Testor’s Dull Coat Clear Flat Lacquer

compared to

Krylon’s Acrylic Clear Satin

Thank you in advance for the assitance.

Ric,
I’ve been using Krylon UV Resistant Clear Acrylic Matte.
I prefer acrylic to lacquer. I used Valspar clear lacquer over some decals and they faded within a couple months.
I found the UV resistant Krylon at Michael’s.

I find anything Testor’s to be over-priced.

Personal choice would be Krylon both for uv and very few things have a flat finish

Do I remember correctly that “Dull Coat” clouds in the sun or UV? I know that “Bubba” uses “Dull Coat” with alcohol for a cloudy calcified look of water.

Personally, I’ve had better results from the Krylon than the Dullcote, not to mention the Krylon was cheaper…Krylon seems more UV resistant as Ralph mentioned.

Ric, I’ve been using Behr’s “Dead Flat” spray cans on rolling stock with good results. So far no compatibility problems with any of the paints I’ve been using and in the one case where I used it over decals it sure made them snuggle down. I also have used it on the wooden decks around the Bandon depot. Ask Bruce. He saw it when he was here. Absolutely flat, clear finish. I would definately use Krylon over Dullcote for anything outdoors. I used Dullcote for many years when modeling indoors. While an excellent product for inside it’s not well suited for outdoors. No UV protection and wears off easily. The clouding seems to be a combination of temp./humidity and applying too heavily in one coat.

This is the car I used Dead Flat on over decals. Still holding up fine although I don’t leave anything with decals outside in the weather except when it’s being operated.

Oh yes. Richard made me order a couple of cans of dead flat. It is GOOD STUFF. I like it better than the Krylon for putting over wood as it IS dead flat. I used it on my logging caboose.

Ric, Krylon sells two different clear acrylic sprays. One is labeled UV Resistant. One is not. At Michael’s, both were priced at $6.29. So I bought the UV Resistant. The matte finish turned a high gloss black finish on this combine roof into a nice flat black. Ralph

Can someone point me to a URL that describes Behr’s “Dead Flat?”

Try this: http://woodworker.com/dead-flat-spray-finish-mssu-934-154.asp

You’re looking for 934-154

Not much information…but at least you can buy it.

I am not sure why, but the thinners used in laquers are alway a bit ‘hotter’ than the acrylics. The thinner in the laquer if not used very judiciously will penetrate much more than you want. The UV properties of the Krylon, and of course the price are important too.
