Parts for a Bachmann 2-8-0 Consolidation

I am trying to source a screw for the Bachmann 2-8-0 Consolidation (Connie) Part Number 10320.

A search of the Bachmann store reveals they are available for $0.30 each, I have lost 1 and the counterweight fouled the running gear stopping the loco abruptly so I plan to order 10 for a total of $3.00, when I estimated shipping to Australia the cost is $21.60.

This makes it a very expensive set of screws.

Are there any other places where I may buy these screws for a bit less?

Thanks in advance for any help.

      Hi Gap.

They could be a standard 3 mm thread.  If so they are commonly available. JayCar and Altronics have a variety of lengths.

But more likely they will be 2 mm thread which is not very common.

Specialist nut and bolt suppliers will usually have them.

      Thanks Tony,

It measures 1.94mm with my micrometer so close enough to 2mm.

Will try my local bolt and nut shop to see if they can help.

I have emailed Bachmann for a more realistic price for shipping.

Word of warning to all Connie users when doing maintenance (oiling etc) I suggest that the shrews be checked because everyone on mine had worked loose all the was holding 1 counterweight on the axle was the plastic plug.

It will now be part of my before run checks.

If your screws in the counterweights need tightening I recommend removing them and then use blue (removable) loctite on the screw threads.

I purchase the screws I need localy. 2mm screws of various lengths are a very common screw used in Large scale.  I keep a supply of several lengths on hand.

I have considered a loctite thread lock.

I am taking one of the screws to the local industrial fastener supplier to see if they might have some.

I get mine from Aliexpress in China. The shipping might be a bit more palatable!

I emailed Bachmann and asked this question "Is it possible to get a more accurate price including shipping of Qty 10 of these screws shipped to Australia?".

      This is the reply

"Sorry but we do not set the international charges.

We use APC Postal Logistics and the charges are calculated automatically when the order goes in using their program.

That is what they charge us for the shipping so that is what we have to charge you."

So guess Bachmann is out of the question.

In the US  I use Bolt Depot as they have both metric and US screws of various sizes and very reasonable US shipping rates.  I tend to order once or twice a year.

Since their prices are very reasonable I tend to order a variety if I can not identify the screw up front.

I have had a stroke of luck, while raking through my tin of odd screws I came across an M2 bolt that fitted, it is a bit longer but that is not an issue as the axle hole was deep enough.

While I was at it I added a star washer which should hold it in place.

All of this necessitated a test run for half an hour, (a test flight is always a part of any major maintenance isn't it?)

      Thanks for all the help
