I read all the articles and really think his modular large scale layout is a great idea.  Even went back and reread all 4 articles together after they were all in print.  I felt they needed to put a copy of the track plan in each issue, because they kept referring to it and I had to constantly go back to the issue with the track plan.  Still get MR every month and Tony's back page article and the one on Operations are always the first things I read.  Always enjoy the track plans and seeing other people's railroads.  MR, the Illinois Traction Quarterly and the Gazette are the only 3 magazines I still get.

Look forward to seeing Tony's layout in person, when the World gets back to normal.

I think that layout is long gone. Like most MR build layouts, it gets built then sold or given away. This was built what almost 20 years ago?

My mistake Craig, and all.  I thought we were talking about Tony Koester's latest write up in MR, "Building Wingate in O Scale".  I don't remember anything of the "Claremont and Concord".  More research required.

I think this was in the early 2000's or late 1990's? Right about when 1/29 was taking off. Tony used a USAT 44 tonner and build a small switching layout on 4x8 tables. Used 4' diameter curves and all. It was one of the first times I saw a serious large scale modeler in MR (and maybe the last?).

I wouldn't be surprised if the new layout (O scale) is also in someone else's house by now. I'm on a groups.io account that Tony is in and I think he mentioned it was completed a few years back before MR published the article and the layout is long gone.

Honestly if I was to redo outside modeling again I would do O scale....then I would not have to have built what I have for my enjoyment as I could buy it and it would be and even bigger RR by scale . However that is past tense so it matters not.

      Rooster,

I think I could easily go to O scale as well. It's a nice balance of size, and it seems to be well supported (at least at this time).

I know LGB, Bachmann, USA Trains and the old Aristo Craft are not perfect with UV protection, but I do think they put a little more thought in to it than the smaller scales, including O.

      .

If O scale or smaller were to be used outside, I think this would really have to be considered.  Lots of paint and silicone glue to offer protection.

O Standard gauge maybe, but my plans for On3 outdoors died when I saw the grains of sand stuck to the rails after a rain...  on code 70 rails.... boulders they were.
