I am amazed at how fast they restored her to operating condition.

Why must there be three locos in that train? Certainly 4014 could haul it by itself. (https://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-undecided.gif)

The Bigboy and the Challenger were heading to Ogden Utah for the 150 anniversary of the Golden spike ceremony. The diesel went along for the ride. It was a break-in run for 4014.

I think the Challenger is awaiting flues, that’s the Northern FEF (four/eight/four) 844 along for the ride(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif) The dismal is the to stop the train, 'cause that’s the brakes!

Thanks John. Couldn’t remember which engine the second was.

What did steamers do for brakes before dynamic braking?

Steve,

First they used steam brakes and later air brakes.(https://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

First they had men on top of cars that would manually set car brakes or release them for grades. Later the men would set or release the retainers, which managed the air used in the brakes.
