No guesses?  Pretty rare today but back in the 60's there were many.  Especially BN

Nope.  Rare to see one of these Destictive castings today.

Q: "OK Guys, Guess what I'm working on now"
      A: Your current project.

That was too easy. Need tougher questions.

Odd, I figured someone would get it straight away.  Maybe a full look at the other side helps?

There are so many things a diagonal truss looking thing of ambiguous dimensions can be part of, and I'll bet there is a similar looking model kit part on at least one of the 1977 Star Wars movie studio models.

I will use 4 of the same part standing vertical, equal distance apart to make something not commercially available in g scale but easily found in O, HO and N

      Previous hints:

      Rarely seen today

Most prevelent on the Burlington Northern in the 60's

the real word part is a casting

One probability which comes to mind now with that clue is the side posts for an end bulkhead on a bulkhead flat.

You got it Forrest!  Well, close enough.  4 of these make up the "bulk" of the structure.  It's a General Steel Castings GSC/GSI Bulkhead.  Here's a test model I've made to simulate a steel plated end.  I plan on making the wood version as well.

Well the BN didn't exist in the 1960's....

Isn't that end similar to the old LGB bulkend flat?

Yes Craig, Sorry I should not have combined the two.  From my research I found you would be most likely to see these in the 60's and in 1970 when BN was formed it became the owner of most of them.  Yes, LGB made the wood-end version (discontinued).  I will be using plain LGB flat cars and adding my ends.

With no size reference in the first post, I didn't know if the part was big enough to be an under-frame, or as small as an equipment hatch cover. Turns out it was neither that big nor that small....
