Daves 2019 Mik Challenge Build

Of course I’m in… Just wouldn’t be Mik’s with out me…

So this year… Rolling Stock… My pike needs Boxcars… So it shall be…

And so they can be used on the sharp turns of the Mtn. Div. they will be shorty versions.

Can never have too many. I have a feeling this one will be a good reference for future builds (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif). I will be taking notes.

OK I’ve finally got to start… Figured out what I’ll do… Tomorrow I’ll actually get some wood cut…

Well, I guess if you are finally starting, maybe I should too!

A triple? What happened? I haven’t hit one of those since I played for Marsolek’s Hardware.

Instead f saying it three times just get started already

Actually got some pieces stuck together… Film tomorrow. I feel so far behind.

Got to the studio, grabbed a card reader, and whaaa Laaa.

Bottom of the car, two sidewalls with a header, and the end pieces, with the tapered roof piece.

Got the side walls and headers glued together.

I’m building two of these, maybe more, as I have a bunch of spare wood cut already.

Progress !

There is still lots of time left and I’m sure your car will come together.

OK guys… Ready to start the underside .

Standard 6 sills with end beams, needle beams, and cast bolsters.

These will all be glued and pinned to the 1/4" ply base.

You got the motor cranked up now and you are moving right along

Got to spend most of today building a pair of boxcars;

Started by gluing and pinning the under sills and the end beams.

Moved on and got the sides connected together, with the end pieces.

And glued and pinned the wall down to the body.

Box cars need plank floors, so why not. Glued and pinned decking. In the door ways the decking extends out past the side.

And just like that. floors.

The end roof line supports I had resin cast.

Glued and pinned the ends and added the mid supports.

And up next, the roof center beam and siding.

I Think I’ve caught up a bit…

Three weeks to go.

Impressive, Dave. You put those two together in no time. I’ve been piddling around trying to put half of one of those together for a week and still not done.

Impressive!

Got a bit more done on the boxcars,

Got the soffits, and the end gables mounted.

Then started on the scribbled siding.

I would have gotten more done but I ran out of clamps……

And tonight… after the glue dries… I get to do the other sides.

I HATE waiting on drying glue……ARggggggggg

Dave, a man should never run out of clamps. They’re like boxcars, you can never have too many. Your construction technique makes quick work of putting them together.

Dave I am following with interest on your construction technique. I would like to build several 1:20.3 box cars in wood but my original one was just to time consuming

Back at the scribed siding attachment…Argggg I hate waiting on glue, Such a waste of time.

Added the next section on the siding…Laaaalaaaaa blaaa blaaaa.

Again clamps was an issue,

Then started on the end walls, while the siding was drying.

La dee do laaaa , nothing to do as I watch the glue dry… Bored… So I turned to making the trucks.

All the pieces, My self cast side frames, e-bay wheels ( might be Gary Raymond), and custom cast talgo bolster w/ bachman knuckles.

And a bit latter…whaaa laaaaa.!!

Added a couple more siding pieces… and waiting some more…
