Garden Railways Magazine

Does anyone have a copy of the 1993 May-June issue of Garden Railways Magazine? It had plans for making circus tents and I would like to get a copy of the article. I would like to add a small circus to the carnival that is already on the layout and I have not find any for sale similar to the ones in the article. Thanks

Well it’s not free, but should have what you want -

I know you’re asking about circus tents, but it reminds me that I’ve always wanted to model an Indian encampment and their “tents.”

You can model a circus for a great many countries railroads but a native American encampment is unique to North America. For those modelling the pioneer days of railroading such a display would be a major enhancement I guess. Maybe some of you might consider this as a winter project.

A young visitor to my home some years ago, not long after the railroad was built here, did - with the aid of my wife - make some wigwams. They survived well, until the arrival of a young dog four years ago! Needless to say the inhabitants moved off to new pastures. I am led to believe that a wigwam is a more permanent structure, whereas a teepee is more portable ad was favoured by nomadic tribes. I have never seen either some maybe you guys in the States will correct if incorrect.

England does have a very famous ‘wigwam’ however. It is a nickname for a Catholic cathedral in Liverpool and commonly known as ‘Paddy’s Wigwam’ on account of the Irish ancestry of many Liverpudlians. It is quite impressive both outside and inside.

tipees are easy. some sticks, some paper handkerchief (just one layer), wet with water & dry for forming, weathering with black coffee.

concerning a circus… - i cheated.

i just put the whole material, posts, tarps and benches on the wagons, that were riding a “Cicus Special”

They may be easy to make in the manner you mention Korm, but for many and that includes me, a more substantial and weighted design would be essential. Otherwise the first gale would soon see them flying away in the air. (https://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)They do need careful placing, but anywhere beneath bushes or trees might render a poor representation of the Prairies.

The same parameters would apply to circus tents and any lightweight item.

Ron, if you go to Garden Railways web and type in search field “circus tent” you can down load PDF file it’s 3 pages
