Ah yes, from The Doughnut in Granny's Greenhouse, very  A  much loved LP I have. Sometimes I think these forums can get a bit like My Pink Half of the Drainpipe and one ends up feeling a bit like the Urban Spaceman. OK, well and truly off the rails now.

RE FATHER FRED & G SCALE CENTRAL.....  It's a two way traffic..I left GSC  about 4 yrs ago as the format kept changing every few days and I got fed up.

(It was formally G Scale Mad  and it was a well loved site, but it is said some  members started threatening the web owner  would you believe!! so he gave it up  and the present couple  started up  as GSC.

I feel better with LSC as I model US logging -   GSC has a more UK/Euro continent  aspect.  Each to his own.

I also visit Freerails   AND  I def miss  AWNUTS

if you visit all these for an average half hour a day, you are working a full shift, just to stay informed...

I don't visit all of them every day, and many of the ones I do see every day -- like the various FB groups -- I may spend 30 seconds rather than 30 minutes. But I have always been that way. Back in the day I would purchase read 3-5 newspapers a day, and today I have a running list of 10 websites I visit every day.

Okay, maybe I am the oddball here ...

I have been threatened both legally and physically because of how I run the site.  Some people just get too worked up about the hobby.  I've always said that we are grown men playing with toy trains.  If you have any feelings about them besides "These are cool!" you need a new hobby.

Agreed, I would submit that if you can get really worked up over things on a hobby, then it's no longer what a hobby should be, fun, enjoyable and something to look forwards to.

".... Okay, maybe I am the oddball here ..."

      Nope,  well-read !

Personally I don't fixate on just one website,  but am registered with at least half dozen g-gauge flavoured forums  (don't bother with the FB's).     Reviewing diff. topic/threads (at diff. times, time permitting),  since not all topics are covered in just one location.

Bob and Greg, I agree. At one show I had a guy all up in my face, yelling and turning red because I had 2 Penn Central F units. He was screaming that it was a "traitor's train!" That guy was certainly taking things a bit too seriously. I went into damage control mode, being as calm as possible, and let him rave. When someone is raving like that, and I don't react back., that just torques them off even more. And that guy was torqued almost to shear.

Same happened to me a couple of years ago at a major UK model rail show. I'd just walked in and spied a stand at the entrance promoting 7/8" (1:13.7) modelers. I casually mentioned to a person manning the stand,"Getting quite popular this scale, isn't it ?". The guy then went off on a 5 minute rant, who's basic theme was about how all these manufactures and "cheque book modelers" were ruining his hobby. I made my excuses and left thinking,"You are not really selling this to me, are you ?". Never mind that this was the not quite the example to set to casual visitors to the show as one of the first exhibits they were likely to encounter.

Yes, because this hobby has a lot of retired people, a rift can grow between those with more disposable income and those on a severely fixed budget.

On another forum (and another scale) there is a guy that is on permanent moderated status because when he cannot get something they way he thinks it should be, it's usually because the rich people are ruining it for him, and that they are jerks and they voted for the wrong guy, and his benefits are not as high as they should be and on and on... a simple thing like having trouble repairing a low quality loco turns into WWIII...

The forum owner and the other moderators actually threw him off several times, until I volunteered to personally moderate him... over the course of about 5 years it has settled down, with only random "eruptions", but you can tell he's often still simmering underneath...

It's an easy trap to fall into, that everything that goes wrong for you gets magnified all out of proportion and everyone else is wrong, not you.

Anyway, like that song says: "Don't worry, be happy"... Often I have to look for that light at the end of the tunnel, but it's there, just focus on it.

      Greg

Ha HA! I was thinking that someone might say that! (when focusing on the light at the end of the tunnel I do indeed have to not think of a head on collision with an oncoming train indeed!)

      Thanks for making me laugh!
