      WSRR Wood Fired Pizza Oven

      Well, I wasn't quite ready to start this discussion quite yet, but here goes.  For many years I have been hankering to build a wood fired pizza oven out next to our deck.  Finally in the summer of 2016, my son and I took the plunge and started work.  Now, realize this is a lot like some of the projects we do here with our trains, structures and layouts in that it takes a lot of time.  For most WFO you pour a slab foundation, lay a few courses of CMU's, pour a concrete hearth and build the oven.  For some reason, I always have to make things a little more complicated than they should be.  I want to be able to access the WFO from my deck which is about 4 feet off the ground.  So, instead of building a hearth that is usually 3-4 feet off the ground, I put mine about 8 feet in the air.  This meant a larger foundation, an intermediate free spanning slab and more block.  But we got that part done.  It just took us 2 summers to make it happen.  I'll detail the work up to this point later, I've got a cookhouse (Mik's Build Challenge) to build right now, but below is where we are today.  Next up is the actual oven construction.  Fire brick were delivered this past week but I am still waiting on some insulation board and fire clay to arrive so I can get started on the oven.  More later.

      With all that room Dan you could build a wood fired smoker right next to it and have a two for one. i.e. BBQ chicken pizza mmmmmmm good.

      In any event I give you top marks for putting so much time and effort into being a pizza purist!

      I started mine about 10 years ago.  I poured the slab and built the walls at that point.  About three years ago, I poured the reinforced platform for the over (the other section is for a countertop).  This back area had been neglected while we worked on other projects, but we just got a deck and patio in last month, and now I HAVE to finish the oven.  In fact, I'll be doing that before I'm allowed to lay any track out there.  :)

      I have a big pile of field stones that I'll used to veneer the CMU, so the finished product will look like a stone structure.  I'm using the Forno Bravo plans.  

      The track from the basement to the yard will run down that fence.  Most likely behind the oven, but I'll put it in front if I can come up with a clever way to do it.

      Its amazing how time flies with these projects.  I have to get mine complete before the boy graduates in May.  We have promised him he can have a graduation pizza party at our house.  So updates will be coming as soon as the weather gets to where it is not freezing all the time.  I am following the Forno Bravo plans myself, basically.  I'll add a few of my own elements.  Good luck with yours, Eric.

      Now that the Challenge is complete for another year .  Its time to get back to the WFO.  But first I must digress and back up to the beginning and show you how we got to today.  

       

      First we had to excavate and pour the foundation slab.  Now the dirt here in our yard is really dirt but it thinks and acts like rock, especially during the hot months of summer.  The foundation slab needs to be about 9x9 feet and the back of it must be dug into a small hill.  So, me, the boy and Mr. Deere got to work.  Took us about a half day to get the required dirt removed.

       

       

      After all the dirt had been moved we placed the forms and stone.

       

       

      Then it was time to mix and place concrete.  The boy had the easy task of mixing almost 100, 80 lb bags of quikcrete.  Mr. Deere and I had the task of carrying it to the site and placing it.

       

       

      Once the foundation slab was poured and cured, we set four courses of 8" CMUs, built supports for the slab and built the form for the arch doorway.

       

       

      We also filled all the block cores with concrete.  For some reason, I did not get any photos of the first slab pour.  But after it was poured we set four more courses of block, filled the cores with concrete and steel, built the forms, placed steel in the slab forms and poured the hearth.

       

       

      You notice, we took the lazy/smart way out on the last pour and simply made a phone call.  Much less stress that way .  So that gets us to where we were when I first started this thread.

       

       

      I'll let everyone digest this for a while and I will get us to where we are today.  Thanks for following along.

      Well Chris, I tend to agree.  We have discussed the fact that it could realistically be used as a storm shelter.

       

      Ok, where are we today?  All materials are on site.  Over this past weekend we were able to get the hearth insulation cut and installed.  It consists of a 2" layer of calcium silicate ceramic fiber board and a 2" layer of aluminosilicate ceramic fiber board.  Quite nasty stuff when it comes to cutting.  Easy to cut, but you have to wear the proper safety equipment.  Also got the floor tile cut.  I am using 12" x 12" x 3" high duty firebrick tile for the floor of the oven.  Built the form for the inner arch of the oven and got it set in the proper place.  I hope to start laying the dome bricks this weekend and get the inner arch bricks cut and temporarily placed.

       

       

      Not sure if I've mentioned it, but it will be a 42" oven.

      I wish, Pete.  Been piddling with it for almost 2 years now.  But I do have a deadline so it will get finished before the end of May 2018.  Otherwise, it will probably become my new home

      So basically your saying....."At Ken's age he's got a ton of wisdom but by the time your pizza arrived he would probably be cold"?? ...Don't count on it as I heard rumors he fought in the French and Indian war and could have possibly inspired the invention of pizza!
