Aristocraft vs. USA Trains. Not only are the USA Trains too small, the door window is smaller yet.

Rooster, I'll be the first to admit that I'm smitten by the Aristo girls. It's hard to look at any other.

Thanks Chris. Any start date for your project? If spring ever arrives I imagine I'll put this project on hold for a bit.

Paul, I make it sound worse then it is. I pick up lot's of units for kitbashing, and then grow to like them the way they are. That said, I can't afford to collect every road name.

Actually Shane, I'm cleaning off space for it right now.

Long hood is almost complete. I decided that it would be easiest to paint before adding the snow shields. I think I'll do the cab and nose next.

Thanks Guys. I think that was the easy part.

The design and construction of the cab is going to take some time. CN decided to ditch the flat front, so I'm working with angles which always slows construction. I'm going to hold off on the door until I have the nose in place. I think I'm going to permanently attach the top of the cab to the body to make it easier to add the snow shields. The lower part of the cab will be attached to the nose section. At least that's the current plan.

I'm making some progress. It's starting to look like a locomotive cab.

First I'm gonna say the progress is looking good.

Then I'm gonna be that guy and ask how certain you are of the durability of the cab wind deflector (which sometimes had a mirror), the awning, and the air intake's snow shield?

      Thanks Forrest,

Good questions. Time will tell. The mirrors are fairly protected by the awning/sun shades, which are 1/16" styrene, and with the 30 degree sanded edge, they are  a little thicker where they attach. The outer edges are also sanded at 30 degrees to hide the thickness. ( Much stronger then what's on the Aristocraft Dash 9's ) The snow shields are also 1/16" styrene, and the triangular shape makes them pretty sturdy, and allows good contact with the body. That said, they definitely aren't a lift point.

Nice start on a fine looking rebuild Shane. You have a few followers sharpening their pencils getting ready to cut plastic.

Thanks David. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work. Your streamline conversions are very impressive.

Thanks Pete. You wouldn't sound dumb.

I don't plan on doing a detailed build log for this one, but if there are any questions about measurements, or how anything is done, I'll do my best to give a detailed answer. (some of the details like the mirrors will be covered in the SD60f build log)

      Shane,

Who are you getting the headlights and antenna from?

      Shane,

Are you going to change out the fan housings?

Chris, they are from Miniatures by Eric . I use his plows as well. Prices are very reasonable.

Paul, initially I planned on it, but the USA trains fans I planned on using require a larger hole. After looking over the prototype photos, I found that every unit used different styles of fans. Unit 6004 sports 5 different styles, including one of the old style like you see on GP9's. I decided to keep what I had on this one to save some work.

      Rooster?

      Shane,

The only thing I did with my fans was to use the taller housings for the three fan set and the lower housings on the dynamic brake, but I do have to agree that on the prototypes there were lots of variations.
