Huckleberry hunting in N. Idaho

Our first successful berry hunt this week into the high country of N. Idaho. A few pics from the trip.

This is the elusive quarry.

Checking the patch for ripeness.

Some of these trails have built in tank traps!

A lone sentinel at an altitude about 5,000 ft on the ridge

Steep shale mountain side.

Definitely God’s country.

Typical trail we explored.

Berry patch amid the giant bear grass.

Heading down back to camp.

The Thimble berries weren’t quite ripe yet.

We fell in love with Huckleberry ice-cream when we visited Yellowstone earlier this summer…yum!!

Great pictures! I get the idea, bears may also like those berries. HMMMM! Thanks for sharing.

Yeah, we always scan for bears when we approach a patch. We carry “bear spray” and my brother packs a .44 revolver.

Actually, the moose mothers and calves are more dangerous. We spotted one on the road ahead of us and stopped to see what she would do. Thankfully she walked off in the woods with her calf. Meeting one around a blind corner could be a sticky situation.

Nothing better than fresh picked huckle berries. Everyone always keeps “their” location a secret. Huckleberries are on the the top of my list of favorite berries, than come bosenberries…
