Hi,

I’m a 3d modeler and digital media specialist. I’m trying to create a 3d model of the train filmed in the Lumiere Brothers film “a train arriving at la Ciotat”. Here is a video.

I’m having trouble identifying the train and finding other views for better ideas of how to model it. For one thing there is this weird overhead cam type structure right behind the chimney on the front, and I’m having trouble seeing the drive pistons.

Can anyone give me some idea of where to look for additional images for this design? or can someone identify some similar design that might give me more ideas for how the locomotive was constructed.

I’m not certain what class or wheel designation the locomotive in the Lumier Train is but the one below was from a very similar period.

The overhead link, may be as on the Mason Boogies and was related to valve timing. I include this pic to see it.

Unlike the above engine with outside cylinders your loco probably had inside cylinders that powered a crankshaft.

The crashed french engine has an outside frame and outside Stephenson valve gear.

If I recall from reading an account some years ago, the accident happened at very low speed. Loved the movie.

I think the ‘box’ just behind the stack is the steam regulator valve with external steam pipe to the cylinders.
You can see a solid shaft control going all the way to the cab.
Later locomotive designs had the regulator within the steam dome and the steam pipe to the cylinders inside the boiler and smoke box.

If you look at the thread below there are many early locomotives leading up to that that era (1895) that had this arrangement.
