Source for a working crane?

I have been thinking about building a 250 ton crane as my next project and I had an idea to use the workings of an RC crane to have the boom raise and the hook line in and out. If I was to attempt this build where can I get a RC crane?

Todd,

1/24 scale might be something you can retrofit. Do a search for toy RC cranes, then weed out the scales…

The Gal Line has kits for 250T cranes that can be Radio Controlled, very nice cranes I own one and wish it was radio controlled, Alan suggested it could be retrofitted as I recall.

Maybe you could find an old LIONEL portal gantry crane

It had three functions rotate, hook up/down, and (manually) boom in/out.

one on ebay now - cheap

Thanks for the link Bill Z that is a neat Lionel crane but I don’t think I could use it.

Thanks Michael I’m going to have to investigate those RC cranes. That one from the Gal line is amazing looking but $450 OUCH. That is why I’m interested in building my own.

Todd

take the guts out and build the type of crane you want around it.Saves a LOT of work building the operating mechanism so you can concentrate on the boom and cab

See my thread on looking for pulleys and wire rope. I was able to locate most things needed for working crane models.

Todd,

I am working on one currently. Check out www.thegalline.com as he has a 250ton crane kit and instructions on how to motorize it based on the gentleman from this thread:

Super job on that crane Joseph. What you said about the cranes being distinct to each RR is so true and that will allow me some artistic license when I do decide to tackle this build.

Here’s my motorized version of a smaller crane. I am still working on installation of an electro-magnet.

Nice job Dan. Getting that to work must have taken some clever thinking.

Thanks Todd. I have some photos of the interior showing the two motors. Now if I can remember how to post pictures here I will.
