Pony plow for Fairymead

Shawn get the storms before me here in Maine so I know winter is coming…

I need a 7/8th scale plow with some heft behind it ( well two foot gauge heft, you know maybe 10 tons) I will build a plow car eventually, but for now I can use a pony plow as they did back in the day. this is mounted on the pilot of the engine and only mounted in winter time.

My Fairymead has an old style long wooden pilot. I made the plow to clip onto it, with a couple of wood screws to retain it. I had time off this afternoon an just kinda went at it. I found a piece of galvanized steel from a “stove pipe” I made a pattern then just started cutting steel. the right and left wings are riveted together along the front and a bracket under the front gives it all plenty of rigidity. I used steel escutcheon pins as rivets. they are fit into a tight hole clipped to length than peened over with a hammer…old style

Great job Eric, Im sure you will put it to good use soon.(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)

That looks so cool on the Fairmead. I always liked the liked of that style plow. You can take it off and store it by the engine house and let the summer plants take over around it. Then come winter break it loose and have it ready for snow. I can wait to see it in action. I heard something might be brewing Sunday night/Monday.

LOVE IT Eric!

Only reason Shawn posted as it has Fairy in the topic!

Our snow is more like monday-tuesday but I am ready now!!!

Sweet! Looks right at home there. Always love your prototypical construction methods. Shawn’s summer storage suggestion makes it even better. I was looking forward to some plowing this winter, but now the pike is halfway taken apart. I’m just going to have to exist by watching you guys force your way through the white stuff. It’s ok though, I’ll have 10 acres to play with when we land. Great work looking forward to those videos!

That is a neat plow, but not sure that Eng. can push that mush snow on the looks and size of the plow.

That’s would be a lot of deep snow and may need lots of helpers. lol.

Detail on it looks Great…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

I guess it depends on if its the light fluffy stuff, or the wet heavy stuff.

I took the plow off and gave it a coat of gloss black. I was done before dark so I took it out for a portrait.

the plow is a little large but thats OK ill double head if need be. She’ll probably manage a scale foot or less (1inch) of light powder. might need some help with any more.

This is Sandy River and Rangely Lakes #6 (now WW&F #9) with a plow

Wow Eric it looks like the real thing. Great job.(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-smile.gif)

Nice!

Great loco! (plow is good as well!!)

Very Real and some nice photo… (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Unpainted plow looks downright brutal. Top one of the painted and plowing photos is my favorite. Useful, mechanical, and yet artistic.

Beautiful work Eric! Really neat that you screwed the blades over the existing pilot. It’s always been a mystery to me how the support was arranged for these smaller blades. Do you think that’s how it was done on the prototype?

Looks Great Eric! Really like that Period photo too.

Great question Cliff! I’d be interesting in seeing some photos of the actual connection on the prototype too! Unfortunately for us, not many photos exist from that angle.

Nice addition Eric. Get the camera ready for the videos(http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

We have snow in the forecast for tonight and tomorrow…hope it is the right amount! the Goldilocks zone!

Top Notch Eric. That looks so good. In the old timey photo their plow has a draw bar… hint… (I think you need one on yours)

Another neat thing in that photo is that double ball signal in the distance.

When you build the plow car you could borrow the design of the broken down one that they have at the Portland Narrow Gauge museum.

I have a photo of it somewhere.

Happy RRing!

Todd–

I dont want mine all rotten like that one…I think that will just come to pieces just moving it…Nope! Mine will look new!
