Yore Mine

When I built my layout I had added a mine with the intentions of adding a 16mm line to connect it. I got as far as building the mine entrance and putting a section of track coming out of the entrance. Now the name was my wife’s creation. I guess she was bored one day and had a lot of thinking. I come home from work to find a sign at the mine entrance. On it it said Yore Mine, fools only. With some fools gold next to the sign. Its kinda was meant to be a romantic sort of thing but I liked it and decided to keep it as the official name.

Their is an area by be that is know as the Florescent rock capital of the world. I happen to have a bag of the rocks from out trips there. When you hold a black light to the rocks they glow. My plan is to put the rocks in a mine cart and spread in the area around the mine. At some point I want to figure A way to get a black light hidden by the mine so the rocks give off the glow at night. That Im still figuring out.

My next step was to add a small shaft house to the top of the mine. It had to be something small and backwoods. Everything I have seen was too big so I put it off until I found something. Just the other day while look at freerails forums I can upon a neat shaft house that was exactly what I have been looking for.

Below is the image from freerails of the Shaft house and hoist that I plan on building.

I started with a sheet of coroplast (Thanks Jon). After seeing what Ken has done with the coroplast I decided to give it a try. After doing three buildings with it I was hooked. Its easier to cut out windows, doors and make the angles. So far I got te shaft house built and the wood platform.

Next step is to add siding, window and door.

Great Start!

looking good Shawn.(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Cool Shawn, That will add quite a bit of variety to the pike. Now you can have some ore hoppers running around too instead of just log bunks.

A word of caution though, for all the hard work you are going to do on this, I hope you don’t just get shafted in the end ! (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-sealed.gif)

Edit: to suggest these- http://www.largescalecentral.com/forums/topic/26148/hartford-lenora-mt-sicker-ore-cars/view/post_id/324328

most excellent. I like the name and the way it came to, be glad to see it stick

Thanks guys. Randy I might have been shafted by Rooster already… I have a bunch of the Accucraft Iron Mt Ore cars that should work out nice. If I end up doing a 16mm line around the Mt Ill have to build some 16mm stuff. Thats down the road at some point. For now its going to be an abandon mine until the logging operations take off.

Women’s work

Looking good!

BTW, one possible way to add black lights is with LEDs. There are UV LEDs available.

Where will it be placed on the layout and what are the mine dimensions of the structure ? You need a new cabin for Mr Russell as well!

Thanks Ray, Ill have to look into the LED sounds like that might work the best and maybe do some sort of solar power with battery.

Rooster the Shaft house will sit above the mine located behind the yard at the base of the mountain. Ill have to get an updated shot but this is when I first started the layout. The opening has changed and I will have to rework the top to make everything fit. I plan I building small retaining walls out of stone etc… Roosters house will be coming soon.

Thanks but the picture of the completed mine is not the one I built. That is the one I plan to build for my outdoor layout.

Got more done to the shaft house. Siding is done and I started to build the shaft frame. Still need to sand down the wood in spots but I has that rough look I want so far. I also started the stone wall that will act as a base. I used that tile block from Lowes, since I had a sheet of it laying around.

Use it well as it doesn’t seem that they stock that stuff anymore.

Its a shame they stopped although I haven’t looked for it in a while. I’m glad I bought some extra when I did.

Rooster Shut up.

I finally finished the Shaft house (Shut up Rooster) Just need to paint roof and put on layout. I have to wait until the ground thaws and snow melts. The pulley is from two LGB spoked wheels shaved down and glued together…
