What type of drill bit to drill Himalayan rock salt ?

I have a chunk of Himalayan rock salt that I need to drill a 3/8th hole for a piece of rope.

What type of drill bit do you use to drill Himalayan rock salt ?

How big of hole? Thread? I have small diamond covered drills for rock and because most salts melt I wouldn’t use water.

Rope? 1/2" then I’d try a carbide tip…

If you hold it for me! (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Sean, I would just get a 3/8 masonry bit from the Home Disappointment and Se if you can borrow a light duty hammer drill from somebody. You may get away with a normal drill but a hammer drill makes all the difference. I would think rock salt would be fairly soft compared to most rocks, so you might get away with a normal drill.

And I’ll bite, Why does one put a piece of rock salt on a rope?

Our two horses love it!

FYI the wife bought one with a rope for her horse … My horse’s ends up in the poop pile … can you say we some rope!

i DID use just normal drills for brickwalls.

edit, but it was just common andine stone salt, no noble himalayan…

Sean, a standard masonry drill will work fine. Did the same thing for my wife awhile ago. Don’t use too much pressure as you drill on the rock salt as it can fracture. Ask me how I know that!

I used a 3/8" masonry drill bit in an ordinary drill.
Easy!

Glad you got your problem licked! (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Always good to hear the results too.
