My First Scratch Built Building...Need Doors and Windows

Hello all,

I am trying to scratch build a small station and platform. Since they butt up to a fence, I am only building the front half of the building. I am using redwood for the building and roof. I am in need of a source for windows, doors, etc. I figured I would ask the experts here.

Ill try to post a picture of what I have so far later on.

Thanks

Bob

Mark can 3D print you windows. Or, you can make your own

I think that I still have some of the plastic cut-outs that you glue tight to the structures. I “stucco” my structures with hydraulic cement and this covers the plastic overlap.

These are clear so I just paint them to color. For the windows, I paint the black on the inside to simulate shiny glass with the lights out.

If you ever get down to Orange County (North Tustin area), I’ll give you what I have that you may want. And you can see the railroad.

Left over pieces of these, and similar, are what I have:

But you can get others from Precision Products through Ozark Miniatures. Here’s a link:

What scale?

Grandtline does 1:24 stuff.

@Devon Scale?..We dont need no stinkin scale! Probably somewhere between 1:22 and 1:24 Not really all that important for me since I have a mish mash of scales in my locos and rolling stock. My building are just a backdrop for my trains to pass…as long as they are close…good enough for me.

Thank you to everyone for the info…I may try and make some on my own following Davids tutorial. At least I have some places to look for windows and doors should all else fail. Time spent making windows and doors is time away from running trains and drinking beer!

I’m gonna wait for the picture before I comment.

Here is a picture…this is the prototype, made with scrap redwood that was laying around.

Ok cool !

Get some hardware cloth or ceiling light diffusers for windows and paint it …it’s a flat !

Or just paint it as is!

I used ceiling light diffusers on my saw mill.

Doors are easy.

I used the diffuser material as well for the windows. I think it looks fine. Door was made from wood scraps.

And if scale is no issue and around 1:22 and 1:24 and you want premade stuff the Grandtline stuff is right there. I have never used the 1:24 stuff but I have used their HO stuff and like it very much.

I spent a few hours today working on doors and windows. Of course, I decided for a bay window…probably bit off more than I should have. In the end, I learned a lot and have a plan for when I make the “real one” sometime down the road. For now, the prototype will suffice.

Thanks for the tips and ideas!

Wow looks great

i really like your choice of figures!

for a first this is very good.

i hope we’ll see more from your layout.

looking good. I will have to build many of these facade type buildings.

If you can’t find the windows you want, draw me a sketch with dimensions, and I’ll 3D print one. Or you can do it using Tinketcad <tinkercad.com>. I can walk you through it, but is designed for 4th graders, so even us old guys can figure it out.

@Dick…Thanks for the offer, but I think the Fluorescent Light diffusers work just fine for what I am doing. Thank You again

Nice building, Bob…
