ALCo Century

Started designing the Alco Century to replace the one I scratch built a few years ago, here’s the main body in sketchup

Hope to have the cab/nose printable by the end of the week…

I like it!! This is cool. please share the pictures of the build like U always do. Thanks.

Cab , Short nose, and long hood end are done, printing a long front hood also (right now - 40% Done after 36 minutes)

Cab roof is a little thin, might not hold up , gonna have to make it thicker I think

Short nose version

ALCo Century C-628 Engine #602

This is fantastic work. I would love to see one roaming my rails some day.

That’s an Admiral Cab (Norfolk Sothern Altoona design) in the background BTW)

Long front hoods finished printing

Now that is so ugly its cute. I could see one of them playing on my railroad.

Also planning on doing this one

It has an RS Series low long nose instead of the regular c420 nose

and the start of D&H #642 ALCO C420

ALCo replacement shipment from the Kirkville Locomotice werks (KLW) shops

If you’re printing extras for sale, I’d take that C628 in the D&H photo.
If you’re not, you should enjoy the new models that you’re creating. Very nice!

Test printed the basic rear hood units for the 420 , 424 models the hoods now can be detailed by model now that I know that I can print them decently

Cool. Nice modeling.

That long nose reminds me of a Santa Fe Alco RSD-15:

Mark , you obviously get a lot of fun out of your model printing .

What is the average unit cost for , say , your Century Model ?

I hasten to add that I am not after buying one , I have plenty of unfinished stuff on the go right now , but your approach to making them lends itself to producing the rarer locos and I was just curious to know the cost versus more traditional production costs .

Or would you rather not go down that road ?

The main reason for asking is to compare costs with some of the UK products done by the same method . One company is doing a fine job of dummy diesel engines to give more detail on normal production stuff .

Mike I don’t have the price for all the pieces in my head, however that long hood section is about $10 in plastic and the orange rear end was about 5 - they are thicker then the GP30c walls that I did. and have (in the case of the orange piece) more infill then they neeed to support building the roof.

that’s what the plastic costs and does not reflect energy cost or time involved with design / printing.

The GP-3c that I did is about $50 in plastic only

That’s not bad then , adding the time and machine costs would still make it worth while . I could see a lot of scratch builders taking a shortcut with one . Interesting . Thanks .

When I offer these for sale the cab will come with as 1 piece with roof

Some progress

handrails going on the C420’s
