Need help with Bachmann Emily loco face removal project...

greetings : )

I am buying a Bachmann Emily g scale locomotive from the Thomas & freinds line. I would like to remove just the face and install a regular smoke box door on the front. I don’t want any other parts. I am buying the smokebox piece from the website “smallbrookstudio.co.uk”. I would like someone to help me step-by-step with removing the face and installing the regular boiler front. Any suggestions welcome : ) I am relatively new to this type of modifying. I am wondering what needs to be taken apart and how. Maybe post some pics to show what needs to be done? Thanks. Let me know…-Kenny

I can’t help, but I’d like to have a Thomas style face to convert an old Lionel G locomotive for the grandkids.

I don’t think it is very difficult.
Rooster has used several “faces” on other projects.
I believe Jerry Barnes has a post here about converting the Emily.
A forum search should get you to Jerry’s build log.

I think those links above are for the HO version. From what I recall and see…
There are 6 screws underneath. 4 of them on either side of the main wheel arch on both sides and 2 smaller ones just behind the cylinders. I think there is one down the chimney too. That should loosen the green boiler.
I think the face has clips either side when squeezed from behind will come loose.

I was interested so I poked around the Bachmann web site starting with the above link that, indeed, looks like an HO version

There were 3 Emily links in the Product Support pages(scroll to the Large Scale)

Looks like the drawing you’ll need.

Most of the part numbers begin with a G

Doug’s link has part numbers that begin with an H.

I found that out by mistake as I just scrolled down the list until I came to the first Emily I found and ended up with a duplicate PDF of Doug’s link. Realized my mistake when the coupler looked like some of the German HO scale couplers I’d had some experience with back in the early 80’s.

The first thing I noticed was that the chimney (smoke stack) was a separate part in those HO diagrams. The G scale Emily chimney and smokebox are a single part. The other obvious give away was the way the hook on the coupler went.

The diagrams aren’t exactly indicative of what screws to remove to get the boiler and face off although they are a handy reference. The printed diagrams also come with the locomotive.

There is a Large Scale thread right here on LSC for that project…I think I started it…last year. Gerry has gone a long way since then and is doing a great job…

Two main big screws are beside the cylinders, on the bottom. You’ll have to remove the rods also to clear them from the silver guides, them come along with it. You’ll have to glue a support across the inside also to support the front. The front plate should be black, not white and shorten the supports that stick out. Add angle and bolt heads where they attach to the boiler front will add some detail.

Look carefully at the postings in the Rolling Stock forum and many questions will be answered.
