      Ha!

What surprise.   I bought a Lenovo  last November still haven't figured out the junk with w8.1 or ex11.   Just bought a Toshiba laptop with the same junk on it.  spending a little more time with it, but it's like learning all over again.

My favorite is still  W98,  still have a clone running that,  easy for this old fart to manage.   Bought the Lenovo to replace a Dell with Vista.  It's out of steam and no amount of resurrection will help it.

Up until this thread I didn't even know I had a compatibility problem.

I won't try to catch up to Greg.  He has at least twice as many computers as I do.

I enjoyed sharing the talk and cigar last trip, but did I catch it from Sue for having enjoyed the cigar.   She is talking about another trip in August.

Gee, I thought I was one of the last people on the planet to give up Win98se. I had too when my laptop died.

I still have to wonder why. Why cant stuff just effin work?

All the people involved in the industry are after making money, so just like cars, they keep adding features, which takes new o/s features, speed, memory, disk space, etc.

John, that was a good time, it was worth getting a little hell right?

You can ignore learngin 8 / 8.1, you will be getting your free upgrade to 10 soon! I have one computer running 10, and they improved the start menu once again, it's pretty much back to where it was with windows 7, with the new Metro programs added, instead of the Metro interface only. The new browser was released a week ago, it is called Project Spartan (which I am sure will be shortened to Spartan). I'll try making some posts with it soon.

      Thanks,

      John

I wonder why you want Google earth John?  I use Google maps, it shows me most places including street views without downloading any programmes.  I just type place name into my browser (usually Opera, less frequently Firefox or Chrome) and then click on the word 'maps' when the browser opens.  But you may require more than that.

Some twelve years ago when I bought my first XP desktop I saw lots of comments about IE and Outlook Express/Hotmail.  As a result I have rarely used IE except to read the news page and never used Outlook Express or Hotmail.

I have Windows 7 on my laptop and now 8.1 on this newer destop,  The laptop Sony VAIO was - as it seems most store purchased computers are - loaded with 'bloatware' and unwanted programmes, so for the desktop replacement I chose a German manufactured pc.  I just loaded the W8.1 from a disk* and then only the programmes (from a web search) I knew I wanted.  However I like 8.1 using it as a desktop and not a touch screen.  I think that was the principal issue for many with the original W8.

I have agreed to consider the W10 upgrades but would not dare to dip my toes in the water as Greg has done but as you know that is one of his specialties.  I will await the final release and will only do one pc at a time.

      *  Incidentally the disk was in the German language.  I worked out a lot of what I was reading but was apprehensive.  I then went to the Control Panel and changed the language to English!!   There is still some German to be seen in directories/descriptions of software but nothing consequential.

Good news John, there is a new version out... 7.1.4.1529 and it is working on my computer.

I can see the tracks in my back yard!

      This link may work: http://www.google.com/earth/download/thanks.html#os=win#usagestats=yes#updater=yes

There is QUITE a difference in what you see between google maps and google earth...

Biggest reason I like Earth better than maps is with my 4x4 I go where their little autos can't. Plus I'm a mile off the pavement, in a 'wildcat' area with my 'street section' attached to another street a block from where we oughter be. Maps can't find me!

Thanks Greg, I'll D/L it when I get back, my sister's kids are having a 70th birthday party for her.

This laptop w/w8  does weird stuff.   screen changes w/o any clue as to why
