Large Scale Central

Looking for coaling tower plans

I am looking for some good coaling tower plans with measurements. New style not wood. Thinking of maken one out of Al. .125 materal. and brass.

There’s plans for a 25 ton TW Snow Coaling Tower in the October 1980 issue of MR that look pretty interesting. There’s also some larger ones in concrete, but I suspect they’d be VERY big in large scale.

I’ve always liked the Camak coaling tower.

No plans, but I do have several photos of a very nice concrete coaling tower belonging to the Nevada Northern, in Ely, NV. The tower looks like it would be pretty easy to scratchbuild. Pics start here:

BTW, I can supply higher resolution images if needed.

Really looking for the larger ones in concrete with a few measurements… Building an engine faclity with a 5 foot turntable with round house, transfer table with engine houses on both sides. This will be a 2 or 3 year project do to its size… Never realy seen anyone model something this big so why not…

There’s a bunch of coaling tower stuff here:

Well, in THAT case, MR August 1987 has plans for a 600 ton concrete tower. Looks like it MIGHT be based on this one in Grafton, VA.

There’s also an HO model of a tower by Tichy that you could use as a sample - a bit smaller - only 400 tons.

Dan, the easy way is to find one you like in HO buy it and do 3x the size and it gives you a perfect 1/29th scale building. The see the kit on Ebay and sometime you will even make a couple bucks. Have do this a couple dozen times. Jack

Here is an interesting one done for MicroSoft Train Simulator, it even has some support detail. No measurements, but you really don’t need them, just figure out how big you want to make it, then scale it accordingly.

I found it here… http://railworksamerica.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=239 Edit - Cool, it even has a correctly numbered GN Atlantic!

I came up with one … It looks like it will be around 64" tall. 3 tracks with a coal loading track too… this one is going to be BIG!

This one still stands in this state not too far from me in Salamanca Ny was part of some pretty extensive yards and facilities including a large roundhouse and turntable on the old EL line.

This is what I came up with… Its going to be HUG!!! now just got to figure out how long to build it.

That’s gonna be an incredible building, can’t wait to see it.

That will have to be built in place! Once built, it ain’t gonna move.

I think just a smidge over square would be just about right.

Looking for any recent posts from Daniel and found this one that I never saw!
