That works! A variation on the theme is to draw the opening on part and if possible scribe the lines so as to have something if working the part wears off the mark. If the part is flat enough I'll often follow the scribing with a light pass or two of the fabled #11 blade.

Then as Rooster said, drill, file, carve. I'll often carve the corner down close then file to finish. On really good days carving alone gets me there!

Hmm, the interesting random phrases which arise from the hobby:
      "tiny angle shim mounts"
      "file to finish"
      "carving alone gets me there"
"working the part wears off the mark"

Ya know, someone ought to model a locomotive supply dealer equivalent of a ship chandler and have a sign up for "Sale, 10% off tiny angle shim mounts" Which hopefully will give rise to, "Wait a minute, what's 10% off, the money or the angle?"

      Joe,

Modeling modern diesels with all the goodies added on is just as hard or harder to build from scratch than steam. Many will argue that unless they have done both (I have). Thankfully there were plenty hear on LSC to goad me on as to what I missed and what didn't look right! I'm enjoying your progress and ignore my demented sense of humor either you get it or you don't. "Pictures Joe, study LOTS of pictures". Model what your eye sees and don't worry about scale. There are a few things I missed on my 40 build however like the shell that you have already Ralph Brown gave you the basics and you can add all the detail from there. What's funny if you look at the 40 in HO version most of the seriously detailed models missed a LOT especially the exhaust stack that is in correctly reversed on almost all the "detailed HO models I have seen". Most won't notice that and it matters not.

Build on and share the progress as I'm digging it if no one else is. OR perhaps they are and watching in the shadows for your results??

Here it is. I knew you told me about the exhaust and I forgot to do it!

It's missing all the "proper punctuation "  so this thread is no good!

Steve, Welcome aboard. Since this is Roosters builds I fell the best way to explain is to cite " Few go where no man has gone before" Pay close attention to the hints throughout.

Steve I have lots to share on LSC about my Amtrak builds. You can certainly PM me here on LSC  not on my personal website if you have any questions? Http and Https matters not as I love to share the hobby with my building techniques finds and fails . However if I embed anything wrong there is always the clean up crew.

As it happens, Amtrak itself occasional gets the exhausts reversed too,

Compare location of stack relative to forward and aft sides of hatch,

      to

      http://www.railpictures.net/photo/100115/

There is also a difference between years and orders as to whether fuel tank or battery box is forward or aft.

Way back in 1990s I studied up on the F40 to do a series in N scale while I could handle trains that small.

A lot of the notes are gone or not remembered, but the exhaust stack and the fuel tan things I do remember at least in part.

Only reviving because "I was asked politely". Nothing special and no magic rabbit outta the hat here ?  A lot of research and working with materials I had available that got the job done for me a few years ago. I did learn a LOT of techniques from the process though.

Enjoy as it's only seen on LSC otherwise it would be a cross post    !

      ATTN: Rooster,

As you asked, I took pictures of the AMTRAK Coast Starlight train coming back from the Portland NGRC.  If not noticed, it's in the first section of thread, "Topic: 2019 NGRC Portland Photos".

OSHA team showed up today for current build inspection. If anyone has ever run into these guys on the street let me tell you they are serious Peckerheads!

Did finally finish the other 2 viewliner sleepers minus the phase IV b stripe that is needed. Super detail can come later on the cars.
